Lugo Interactive History Museum

The MIHL is a museum and cultural space located in the A Milagrosa park, north of Lugo, conceived to present the history of the city through audiovisual and interactive resources. It opened in 2012 and also functions as a centre for cultural and educational activities throughout the year.

The building was designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, who chose to place almost the entire volume underground and transform the roof into a large walkable garden. From the outside, the most visible elements are a series of cylindrical volumes that rise like towers, inspired by the image of Lugo’s Roman walls and allowing natural light to reach the underground spaces.

The upper garden of the MIHL works as a large green roof that conceals most of the museum below ground, making it appear more like a park than a conventional building when viewed from outside. The relationship between the garden and the underground architecture is resolved through patios and circular cylinders that pierce the roof, bringing light and air into the interior spaces. These cylinders, clad in corten steel mesh and visible as towers in the landscape, serve simultaneously as sources of natural light, ventilation and circulation, allowing visitors to descend from the park into the museum without an abrupt transition between exterior and interior.
