We continue our journey along Galicia’s coastal geography through its lighthouses. While the first post focused on the lighthouses of Lugo province and the Rías Baixas, this second part highlights those in the province of A Coruña —a region shaped by the power of the Atlantic, dramatic cliffs, and a deep maritime tradition.

Here we find some of the country’s most iconic lighthouses, located in wild and remote places, from Costa da Morte to Cape Ortegal. A coastline that speaks of the sea in all its intensity, where lighthouse architecture blends with a landscape that both stirs and inspires.

A Coruña Province

Ortegal Lighthouse

At Cape Ortegal, where the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea meet, stands one of the northernmost lighthouses of the Iberian Peninsula. The views over the cliffs and the famous Aguillóns make this spot a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Faro de Ortegal, a very popular destination

Punta Frouxeira Lighthouse (Valdoviño)

Modern, unique, and with a design that breaks with the traditional image of a lighthouse. Its vertical structure and location make it striking from any point in the surroundings. A photographic challenge and a visual surprise.

Roncudo Lighthouse

In Corme, on the Costa da Morte, the small Roncudo lighthouse marks one of the wildest stretches of the Galician coast. Very close to the area’s famous goose barnacles, its simple silhouette stands out among the sea-battered rocks.

Laxe Lighthouse

At the mouth of the estuary, the Laxe lighthouse marks an essential point for navigation. Its modest architecture does not detract from its personality, especially when seen integrated into the coastal landscape.

Faro Vilán Lighthouse (Camariñas)

It was the first electric lighthouse in Galicia, and one of the most impressive because of its rugged surroundings. Its silhouette stands out over the cliffs of the Costa da Morte, in a place where the wind seems to have a physical presence.

Muxía Lighthouse

Just steps from the shrine of the Virgen de la Barca, this white and simple lighthouse looks out to the ocean. A balance point between religious symbolism, natural beauty and maritime function.

Lago Beacon (Muxía)

Much more discreet, this small structure shows how maritime signaling can also have aesthetic and photographic value. It’s located in a little-visited natural setting, which gives it a peaceful air.

Lake Beacon Lighthouse

Fisterra Lighthouse

The end —or beginning— of the land. For many people it symbolizes the end of a path, for others a horizon that continues beyond. Its location on the cliff makes it one of the most iconic and visited lighthouses in Galicia.

Lariño Lighthouse

One of the most photogenic. Its base building, made of light-colored stone, has been carefully restored. From there, the view over the Atlantic is broad and clear, with almost infinite visual possibilities.

Louro Lighthouse

Located in the parish of Louro, in the municipality of Muros, this small lighthouse stands in a coastal area of great beauty, between Area Maior beach and Monte Louro. Its white silhouette stands out against the dark rocks and lush greenery, offering a scene where nature and maritime architecture come together in pure harmony.

Corrubedo Lighthouse

This lighthouse stands out because of its surroundings: dunes, the natural park and the coastal profile around it. It’s a place that invites contemplation and walking.

Other lighthouses that also have stories to tell...

There are lighthouses that, for various reasons, I couldn't include with my own images, but they deserve to be mentioned. This is the case of the Tower of Hercules (the only active Roman lighthouse in the world, declared a World Heritage Site), the Touriñán lighthouse, located at the westernmost point of Galicia, or the Estaca de Bares lighthouse, which marks the northernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. They are all a fundamental part of our maritime heritage.

Lights that guide, spaces that mark

There are many ways to talk about the coast. Through its beaches, its fishing towns, its ports… or also, its lighthouses. In this case, this blog entry brings together a visual and personal journey through some of these places. One made of coast, of wind, of light and, in this case, of photographs.
